The moment of truth in Europe
Madrid, Barça and Liverpool. Three giants with 26 European Cups between them. This week, all three look at the scoreboard from behind and have to come back. It’s not just a game, it’s saving the season.
For Real Madrid, owner of the record with 15 titles, the Champions League is their last card. In the League they go far. But in Munich a wall awaits them: Bayern.
“Bayern have won 39 of their 45 games this season”
With Harry Kane at the helm, they are a machine. But in the first leg, a 40-year-old Manuel Neuer was his hero. Madrid created chances. That’s what you should hold on to like a burning nail: it can hurt you. They need to be lethal this time.
And the other giants?
For Liverpool it is déjà vu. PSG eliminated them last year and now won 2-0 in Paris. Arne Slot, his coach, admitted it crudely:
“PSG was the best team, but we didn’t give up… they kept us alive”
Hope is called Anfield. And the memory of that epic night against Barcelona in 2019. A comeback like that would change everything, especially for Slot, under pressure after losing the English title.
Barcelona are also on the ropes after losing 2-0 to Atlético at home. And then there is Arsenal.
They arrive with an advantage (1-0) against Sporting, but carrying doubts. The pressure to win the Premier has shaken them: they lost a final and fell to more modest teams in local cups.
This week in the Champions League could be a respite… or the final blow. In Europe there is no room for hesitation.
