The Champions League is decided: giants on the brink of the abyss
Heart attack Wednesday in Europe. The last date of the Champions League phase arrives with everything to be defined. PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City are among the giants that cannot fail. One stumble and they fall to the dreaded playoffs.
Only Arsenal and Bayern Munich breathe easy. They already have a direct pass to the second round assured. The other 14 positions? Pitched battle.
“I prefer to have more points, but it’s what we deserve. We need to concentrate and try to win our game,” said Pep Guardiola, City coach.
The table is a puzzle. Eight teams, from PSG (6th) to Atalanta (13th), are tight with 13 points. Three points barely separate third (Madrid) from fifteenth (Juventus). Any result can change everything.
Matches that are finals
PSG hosts Newcastle. The French team is ahead on goal difference, but a loss or draw could knock them out of the top eight. Maximum risk for the current champion.
Barcelona (home vs Copenhagen) and Manchester City (home vs Galatasaray) are also looking to climb into the automatic qualification zone. Both have 13 points and need to add.
But the game with the most spice may be Napoli-Chelsea. The Italian team is in 25th place, just outside the playoffs. His coach, Antonio Conte, faces his former club.
“I know them very well, I know their ambitions. They are world champions,” said Conte about Chelsea. “We have to give everything.”
Another legendary coach in trouble: José Mourinho. His Benfica needs to beat Real Madrid and wait for other results to dream of the playoffs.
And watch out for English dominance. Five Premier League teams are in the top eight: Arsenal (1st), Liverpool (4th), Tottenham (5th), Chelsea (8th) and Aston Villa (7th).
Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking to make history. They could be the first team to achieve a perfect league stage (8 wins in 8 games) if they beat last-place Kairat.
Does the new format work?
The brutal uncertainty of this last date suggests yes. There is real danger until the end for almost everyone. Although if we look coldly, only a great team like Napoli runs a real risk of being left out completely.
But that possibility is already something. In the old format, at this point many games were proceedings without emotion. Not today. Today every ball counts as gold.
The school of life, in its purest form on the grass. To win or go home.
