More than a concept: the plan for an electric car ‘Made in Mexico’
The goal is ambitious. With an initial investment of 115 million dollars, the company Beyond Movilidad Compartida (BMC) wants Sonora to be the birthplace of the first electric car manufactured in Mexico. The start-up horizon is set between the end of 2027 and the beginning of 2028.
The announcement came with the official presentation of its ‘ShowCar’, a non-functional conceptual prototype. For the founders, María Elena Gallego Lechuga and Miguel Ángel Bravo, this model marks a milestone. They go from being a promise to a tangible reality.
“With the unveiling of the ShowCar, BMC… concretizes in record time the first physical version of its flagship vehicle,” they highlighted during the presentation to Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño.
A commitment to local suppliers and proprietary technology
The strategy is not just assembly. BMC, which calls itself the first Latin American company to apply 3D printing to automotive development, is committed to a mostly Mexican supply chain. Its objective is to integrate at least 80 Sonoran suppliers that already supply global automotive plants.
The project seeks to go beyond adopting imported technology. Its vision is to develop its own capabilities aligned with national priorities.
The next step already has a date: the development of the first functional prototype will begin at the beginning of 2026. This will be presented at a key international exhibition in the sector.
The initiative is aligned with plans such as the Sonora Plan for Sustainable Development and maintains close collaboration with the Technological Institute of Hermosillo (ITH) to promote the Dual Education model.
Looking north
In parallel, the creation of ‘BMC Arizona’ is being evaluated. The idea is to form the first binational electric mobility company born in Mexico, taking advantage of the advantages of the Sonora-Arizona megaregion and the framework of the T-MEC.
The final message is clear: the push for electric mobility in Mexico must generate investment, employment and innovation from within. This ShowCar is just the first firm step.
