The Earth moved with attitude in Guerrero and the bill was expensive
It seems that Mother Nature lost a screw on the Costa Chica of Guerrero. A 6.5 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in San Marcos, decided to shake it as if it were a carpet full of dust, and the result was one of those disasters that fill the news. The National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) confirmed the seismic crash, leaving its signature of chaos in at least 24 municipalities. A figure that, let’s be honest, sounds like a lot of work for emergency teams.
The list of affected places is so long that it seems like the line-up of a festival that no one wanted to go to: from the famous Acapulco to San Marcos, Tecoanapa, Ayutla, and reaching municipalities in the Mountains and Center of the state such as Chilpancingo and Tixtla. An unplanned geographical tour that showed the vulnerability of the region.
Collapses, water cuts and a military response
The telluric event was not subtle at all. In Acapulco, the Papagayo 1, Papagayo 2 and Lomas de Chapultepezco drinking water systems said “this far” and collapsed, leaving the city without the precious liquid. A situation that turns everyday life into an expert level of survival. But the hardest blow was suffered by San Marcos, the epicenter of the seismic movement. There, approximately 740 homes were damaged, and of that total, 70 simply collapsed, like houses of cards. The tragedy claimed a life: Felicitas Villalba de León, 50, lost her life when the roof of her house in the Las Minas community gave way.
Faced with this panorama, the response was almost immediate. The Army and the Navy activated their relief protocols (the DN-III-E and Navy plans, for those of us who love codes), while the CNPC continues in “total evaluation” mode, trying to put numbers to a chaos that is difficult to quantify. Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda came out to talk about coordination between the three levels of government, a speech that always sounds good but that citizens hope will translate into real and quick help.
This earthquake in Guerrero is one more reminder, of those uncomfortable and violent ones, that we live in a seismic territory. Beyond the figures and official reports, there are entire communities that today face the titanic task of rebuilding what the soil took away in seconds. Civil protection and Risk management are no longer textbook terms but have become the absolute priority.
