6.5 magnitude earthquake causes serious damage in 24 municipalities of Guerrero

The earthquake caused the suspension of water service and left hundreds of homes affected, with a tragic human loss.

The Earth moved with attitude in Guerrero and the bill was expensive

It seems that Mother Nature lost a screw on the Costa Chica of Guerrero. A 6.5 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in San Marcos, decided to shake it as if it were a carpet full of dust, and the result was one of those disasters that fill the news. The National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) confirmed the seismic crash, leaving its signature of chaos in at least 24 municipalities. A figure that, let’s be honest, sounds like a lot of work for emergency teams.

The list of affected places is so long that it seems like the line-up of a festival that no one wanted to go to: from the famous Acapulco to San Marcos, Tecoanapa, Ayutla, and reaching municipalities in the Mountains and Center of the state such as Chilpancingo and Tixtla. An unplanned geographical tour that showed the vulnerability of the region.

Collapses, water cuts and a military response

The telluric event was not subtle at all. In Acapulco, the Papagayo 1, Papagayo 2 and Lomas de Chapultepezco drinking water systems said “this far” and collapsed, leaving the city without the precious liquid. A situation that turns everyday life into an expert level of survival. But the hardest blow was suffered by San Marcos, the epicenter of the seismic movement. There, approximately 740 homes were damaged, and of that total, 70 simply collapsed, like houses of cards. The tragedy claimed a life: Felicitas Villalba de León, 50, lost her life when the roof of her house in the Las Minas community gave way.

Faced with this panorama, the response was almost immediate. The Army and the Navy activated their relief protocols (the DN-III-E and Navy plans, for those of us who love codes), while the CNPC continues in “total evaluation” mode, trying to put numbers to a chaos that is difficult to quantify. Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda came out to talk about coordination between the three levels of government, a speech that always sounds good but that citizens hope will translate into real and quick help.

This earthquake in Guerrero is one more reminder, of those uncomfortable and violent ones, that we live in a seismic territory. Beyond the figures and official reports, there are entire communities that today face the titanic task of rebuilding what the soil took away in seconds. Civil protection and Risk management are no longer textbook terms but have become the absolute priority.

Cuauhtémoc opens training center for women in violence

200 women will receive job training and support to rebuild their lives.

The Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office announced the opening of “Las Amazonas”, a training center aimed at women in situations of violence. The objective is to offer tools to access employment, generate their own income and strengthen their economic autonomy.

A space for independence

In the first stage, 200 women will benefit from job courses, certifications, educational regularization and leadership training. CECATI 62, FES Acatlán, financial education organizations and representatives of the business sector participate to facilitate employment relationships.

The project was finalized after the signing of a commitment letter with educational institutions, civil organizations and companies.

Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega highlighted that more than 80% of the attention of the Executive Directorate of Gender Equality is related to family violence, which generates economic dependence.

“This last branch of our comprehensive strategy is going to help us, which is the recovery of women’s lives. Being able to be independent, being able to get ahead, being able to have a life without having to go through these atrocities that we encounter every day,” he said.

The center is part of the mayor’s Violeta strategy, which provides psychological and legal support and opportunities for women to rebuild their life projects.

El Niño 2026: high probability of strong intensity

The climate phenomenon would arrive with a high probability in the second half of 2026.

El Niño forecast for 2026: what to expect in Mexico?

According to the June forecast of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA), there is a greater than 95% probability that the El Niño phenomenon will occur during the second half of 2026. The researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change at UNAM, Jorge Zavala Hidalgo, reported that the intensity could be between strong or very strong.

“Although the probability of occurrence is high, uncertainty persists about its final intensity,” said the specialist.

El Niño is an anomalous warming of the surface waters of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Its opposite phase, La Niña, brings different conditions.

Effects on the country’s climate

Starting in July 2026, a decrease in precipitation compared to the historical average is expected. The rains typical of the season will continue, but with less intensity. This pattern would continue until spring 2027 in the center, south and Yucatán Peninsula. In the northwest, especially Baja California, above-average rainfall usually occurs during the first months of the year.

The relationship between temperature and precipitation is direct: less rain means higher temperatures. In 2024, for example, low rainfall was accompanied by record temperatures.

Additional risks

The combination of high temperatures and low humidity increases the risk of forest fires. Zavala Hidalgo recommended being attentive between February and May, when these conditions are usually more critical. Fires, in turn, worsen air quality by increasing particles and compounds that promote the formation of ozone.

He also warned that the heat accumulated in the equatorial Pacific moves towards the Mexican coasts, increasing the oceanic heat content. This can accelerate the intensification of hurricanes to categories 3, 4 or 5, although he clarified that it is not enough on its own to guarantee their formation.

The CDMX-Querétaro and CDMX-Pachuca routes will be ready in 2027, with 28 million m² released.

Definitive advances in passenger trains

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that the works for passenger trains are making definitive progress. The routes that will connect Mexico City with Querétaro and Pachuca will be formally inaugurated in 2027.

He detailed that more than 28 million square meters of right-of-way have already been released to consolidate the national connectivity plan.

Investment and key routes

The railway strategy contemplates a global investment of 750 billion pesos. It covers routes to the north and west of the country.

As part of the plan, the implementation of the Santa Fe-Observatorio section of the “El Insurgente” interurban train stands out, the operation of the Lechería-AIFA branch and the share acquisition processes to nationalize the CDMX-Lechería line.

The Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development, Edna Elena Vega Rangel, notified the release of 28 million 452 thousand 804 square meters. 72% corresponds to the historical trace; the remaining 28% is divided between social and private property. 268 social care tables and assemblies with ejidatarios were established to acquire 987 plots.

Production and technical advances

Andrés Lajous Loaeza, head of the Trains and Integrated Public Transportation Agency, reported that the manufacturing of sleepers for the Querétaro-Irapuato and Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo routes has already begun. Structural steel is also produced for the viaducts that will cross the metropolitan area of Monterrey.

The first train on the AIFA-Pachuca route will arrive in the country on July 25. This month the assembly of units for the northern routes will begin.

Military participation

General Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, commander of the Felipe Ángeles Group of Engineers, explained that the Ministry of Defense deploys 33,072 troops and 7,000 units of heavy machinery.
