President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recognized Pope Leo XIV’s statement on migration, where he denounced the indifference towards people on the move.
Close view of the vulnerable
“Pope Leo XIV has a vision of the church that is very close to the poor, the vulnerable, but also similar to that of Pope Francis,” declared Sheinbaum in his morning conference from the National Palace on Friday, June 12.
More than support, human treatment
The president explained that it is not only about supporting migration, but also about guaranteeing humane treatment to those who must leave their countries. “For economic reasons, violence or natural disasters,” he said.
The Pope spoke from the “Las Raíces” reception center in Tenerife, Canary Islands. In his message, addressed to migrants, he stated:
“No matter where you come from, God’s love knows no borders. You are not numbers or files, you are people with a family and a home left behind.”
He also warned: “Do not give your existence to those who trade with it. These false promises are ‘siren songs’, they are industries of death.”
Sheinbaum agreed with this call not to criminalize or stigmatize those who migrate, and reiterated his government’s position of addressing the structural causes of the phenomenon.
