“Cold head”, Sheinbaum’s response to Trump
President Claudia Sheinbaum opted for containment. Questioned about the recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who pointed to Mexico as the “epicenter” of the cartels, her response was brief and calculated.
— “Monday, Monday, cool head,” he said.
He said the phrase upon his arrival at CBTis 296 in Ixtapaluca, State of Mexico. A call for calm that contrasts with the tone of the neighbor to the north.
The accusations that provoked the reply
Trump did not mince his words. He stated that “Mexico is the epicenter of cartel violence”. And he drew a war parallel: “just as we eradicate ISIS in the Middle East, we must do the same to eradicate the cartels at home”.
The curious thing is the contrast in their message. On the one hand, the serious accusation. On the other hand, a shower of praise towards Sheinbaum.
“I really like President Sheinbaum. She is a very good person. She has a beautiful voice. She is a beautiful woman,” he declared.
But here comes the however. The president complained that when he asked for permission to “help” in the eradication of criminal groups, her response was “no.”
Sheinbaum, for now, remains silent on the substance of the matter. Their strategy seems clear: de-escalate with two words. Cold head. On Monday we will see if the tone changes or if ice diplomacy remains.
