It’s not Moby Dick, but almost
The official statement could not help but make the literary nod. The image of the white cetacean immediately evokes Herman Melville’s famous sperm whale. But this is not fiction.
Previous records of famous ‘white whales’, such as Migaloo (1991) or Galón de Leche (2008), belong to other species. This sighting in Loreto is the first documented for the blue whale in Mexico.
The season in Bahía de Loreto is being exceptional. At least 30 different specimens of blue whale have been identified, a species classified internationally as ‘Endangered’. That they sail close to the coast not only makes it easier to observe them, but also indicates a healthy ecosystem.
A fact to remember: while we celebrate this unique find, let’s not forget that this white giant is still part of a vulnerable population. Its rarity makes it special, but its survival depends on its habitat remaining protected.
