President Claudia Sheinbaum questioned this Tuesday the accusations of the United States Department of the Treasury regarding alleged financing of electoral campaigns in Mexico linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The president assured that Washington has not presented evidence to support these claims.
“The people mentioned in this statement were also already under an investigation by the FIU, but they are moving forward with the statement to a joint communication and raising this issue of campaigns, which we do not understand what it is about,” he expressed during his morning conference.
Sheinbaum compared the case to previous actions by the US government against Mexican financial institutions, where accusations were also issued without providing sufficient evidence. He recalled that when Mexico requests extraditions or joint investigations, the US authorities require evidence to proceed.
“When we asked them to see the evidence so that we could accompany us in that process, only two pages were sent without evidence. When we have requested an extradition process, they ask us for evidence. It is a common practice that evidence is requested from both sides,” he stated.
Strategy against huachicol
The president defended her administration’s actions against fuel smuggling. He noted that customs surveillance measures, administrative controls and investigations by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic have been reinforced. He indicated that various investigation files remain open to prosecute the cases and request arrest warrants.
Sheinbaum assured that the actions have reduced fuel theft and smuggling. As an example, the increase in sales of Petróleos Mexicanos and private companies stood out, which reflects a decrease in illegal operations.
“Of course it has gone down and we have the evidence. The best way to see it is the increase in Pemex sales; that is the best way to demonstrate it,” he said.
The president reiterated that the fight against huachicol has included freezing of accounts and other financial measures against alleged perpetrators, with coordination between different Mexican agencies.
