“Why don’t you talk about García Luna?”
President Claudia Sheinbaum closed ranks this Tuesday. Given the revelations of former legal advisor Julio Scherer in his book, his response was a master detour. No, he sees no need for the FGR to investigate him.
“Well no, I don’t see any need. Why don’t you continue investigating García Luna? Why don’t you talk about García Luna?”
That’s the trick. While the media asks about a book that talks about shady financing in the past, she responds with a name from the present: Genaro García Luna. Calderón’s former Secretary of Security, imprisoned in the United States, is his perfect shield.
It’s the classic move: when they ask you about A, you answer with B. And if B is a convicted narcopolitician on the other side of the Rio Grande, the better. Selective indignation as an art of government.
Justice according to the calendar
Sheinbaum insisted that his government acts when there is evidence, citing municipal cases. But about Scherer and his written and published accusations… active silence.
“It is found, there is proof, action is taken, zero impunity”, he declared about his own conduct.
The curious thing is the line that draws between the researchable and the ignorable. A book with specific accusations against Morenistas of the last six-year term: he sees no need. A former Calderonista official already imprisoned: we must continue insisting.
Historical memory seems to have an expiration date. What happened six years ago is urgent; What happened twelve years ago… it’s already over.
He ended by saying that he will not read the book and reiterating that they “do not protect anyone.” The question that remains floating in the air of the National Palace is simpler: who are they really willing to investigate?
