President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the Dr. Agustín O’Horán General Hospital in Mérida, the largest and most modern medical complex in southeastern Mexico and Central America.
With an investment of more than 5 billion pesos, the new infrastructure will guarantee free access to health for 1.2 million people without social security. Yucatán thus becomes the 24th state to join the federalized IMSS-Wellbeing system.
“This delivery demonstrates the commitment of the Fourth Transformation to consolidate public health as a human right and not as a commodity or business,” said Sheinbaum during the ribbon cutting.
Details of investment and capacity
The general director of IMSS-Bienestar, Alejandro Svarch, explained that the hospital has more than 650 beds, 16 operating rooms and 43 specialties. Its operational capacity will allow 1,400 surgeries per month and more than a thousand consultations per day to be performed.
At the national level, the historical investment in the IMSS, ISSSTE and IMSS-Bienestar systems amounts to 181 billion pesos, with 29 new hospitals since October 2024.
The project will also regularize 2,500 health workers and create 3,000 new operational positions.
The governor of Yucatán, Joaquín Díaz Mena, thanked the federal support and celebrated health federalization. He stated that 2026 will be the “year of health” for the entity.
The Secretariat of National Defense reported that the civil works generated more than 2,800 direct and indirect jobs, consolidating one of the most complex medical infrastructures in the country.
