Inauguration of the Agustín O’Horán Hospital and federalization of health in Yucatán
MÉRIDA, Yuc. — President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo launched the Dr. Agustín O’Horán General Hospital, considered the largest in Central America. The central announcement: there will be no cash registers. All services will be free and universal.
Accompanied by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, Sheinbaum signed the IMSS-Bienestar Federalization Agreement. He described it as a step that “will change the lives of millions of Yucatecans.”
“We are experiencing a historic stage for the national health system,” declared the president. “We open the doors of the right to health in the state of Yucatán.”
Sheinbaum recognized the military engineers for delivering a work with cutting-edge technology. He guaranteed free medicines: “When there is no corruption, the money is enough and we give results.”
Federalization and distribution of medicines
Since August 2025, Health Routes have distributed more than 205 million pieces of medicine throughout the country. In oncological drugs, the supply reached 93%.
Díaz Mena assured that the new hospital represents “a new stage for the health care of our people.” He stressed that there will be no charges: “No cash registers because all services will be free and universal.” He defined it as an act of “social justice.”
Alejandro Svarch Pérez, director of IMSS-Bienestar, reported an investment of 5 billion pesos. He celebrated the incorporation of Yucatán into the program and announced the progressive closure of the collection boxes in public hospitals in the state.
The hospital will also train specialists. The engineer of the Secretariat of National Defense, Melior Marduk Martínez, explained that the construction generated 1,643 direct jobs and 1,250 indirect jobs. It started in May 2023 and concluded in March 2026.
“Madam President: today we can report, mission accomplished!” said the engineer.
The work, described as intelligent, modern and strategic, stands as the largest hospital center in the Central American region.
