The epic odyssey of projects that (hopefully) do not remain promises
Ah, Zacatecas, that corner of Mexico where today President Claudia Sheinbaum decided to distribute hugs, bricks and… beans? Yes, because on her work tour, the president not only inaugurated the Guadalupe Regional Hospital (which will benefit 300 thousand people, or at least those who manage to get an appointment), but also announced 20 thousand social housing and a bean self-sufficiency plan. Because nothing unites a country more than a good plate of overcooked legumes at 27 pesos per kilo.
The menu of the day: cement, hospital beds and magic seeds
Among the notable successes: the hospital will have 42 thousand m² (enough to get lost looking for the bathroom), 216 beds (one for every 1,389 potential patients) and even a linear accelerator (for when diagnoses require cosmic speed). Meanwhile, the Housing for Well-being program promises to build 20,000 houses, although no one specified if they will include roofs. Priorities? The fair ones.
And the bean could not be missing, that strategic commodity that Zacatecas will produce as if it were oil. With an investment in improved seeds and a production plant (which hopefully does not end up like so many others: abandoned and full of cobwebs), the government ensures that there will be self-sufficiency. Of course, because if there’s one thing Mexico needs, it’s independence… legumes.
The best? Sheinbaum recalled that the Fourth Transformation restored national pride. “We are a lot of people,” he said, while some official calculated how many of those homes will end up in the hands of relatives of politicians.
