They deliver houses and promise to erase debts
In Monclova, Coahuila, President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered 60 homes out of a project of 88. It is part of the Housing for Wellbeing program, which promises to build 1.8 million houses throughout the country during this government.
“There will be one million 800 thousand homes during the six-year term, it is the most ambitious housing program in the entire history of Mexico,” reported Sheinbaum.
But there is more than bricks and mortar. The president highlighted legal changes in Infonavit. The objective: eliminate or reduce unpayable loans where people have already paid up to three times the value of their house and still owe.
According to official figures, more than 5 million families from Infonavit and 400 thousand from Fovissste would have already benefited from this relief. An accounting movement that seeks to whitewash a historically questioned institution.
The figures behind the political act
The director of Infonavit, Octavio Romero Oropeza, released quick numbers. In Coahuila, the construction goal jumped from 19 thousand to 65 thousand homes. They say they already have 10 projects with 9,600 houses and they plan 26 thousand more by the end of the year.
So far in 2026, the presidential tour has distributed 738 homes in 10 states. From Michoacán to Quintana Roo, the ritual is repeated: photo with giant keys and excited families.
As in any official event, there was no shortage of formal thanks.
“She expressed her excitement at receiving her new house and thanked the President for this opportunity,” said Erika Siller Espino, one of the beneficiaries.
Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas applauded the “coordination” and took the opportunity to mention another state project. The message is clear: here we work as a team (especially in an election year).
Meanwhile, the institute’s networks continue to grant credits. The question that remains floating between so many announcements is simple: will the new contracts prevent them from needing another massive forgiveness in a few years?
