Sheinbaum emphasizes the contrast between the welfare model and the neoliberal period
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, stated emphatically that the governments of the so-called Fourth Transformation are characterized by their vocation to give to the people, establishing a diametric contrast with the administrations of the past neoliberal period. These statements were made during the conduct of the Housing for Wellbeing Program in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.
The federal president assured that the inflation indicator is under control and reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to the continuous increase in the minimum wage. “When we affirm that we are governments of the people, it is because we are governments that provide benefits. Before the beginning of this transformation, previous governments subtracted resources from the people to benefit themselves and those close to them; they were administrations of privileges and widespread corruption. However, the transformation arrived in 2018 with President López Obrador and we proclaimed that we were governments of the people, by the people and for the people,” he declared with forcefulness.
Evaluation of the economic context and political opposition
The head of the federal Executive Branch reiterated her position that those who oppose her government project do so with the objective of “preserving their privileges.” He posed a rhetorical question to the attendees: “Who could oppose honest governments, governments that give to the people, after having experienced those that took away from the people, those that defended privileges?”
“The entire nation is doing better, since our governance is governed by the principle of ‘for the good of all, first the poor‘. Observe, economic problems were predicted for the country. On the contrary, reality shows that inflation is controlled and we will continue to increase the minimum wage, because that was a commitment made and we are going to honor it,” said the head of state.
In his speech, he also highlighted the historical records in attracting Foreign Direct Investment and in the generation of formal jobs. Regarding the logistical delays of a few months, he guaranteed that the Pharmacias del Bienestar network will begin its operations in the State of Mexico starting in December.
Consolidation of social programs and infrastructure projects
By categorically rejecting the practices of corruption, Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated that the Welfare Programs will be maintained, which are now reflected in the Political Constitution as a fundamental right for Mexicans. “And we assume the commitment, for example, that the Mayan Train will not be exclusively for the transportation of passengers, but also cargo, a project that is already advanced. This afternoon we are going to make a supervision visit to the construction of the Mayan Cargo Train. What is the objective? Facilitate better distribution of gasoline and reduce the price of fuel in this region of the southeast of our country,” he explained.
The President reiterated the open invitation to citizens to come December 6 to the Zócalo of Mexico City to commemorate “seven years of transformation in public life in Mexico.”
Infonavit and the new national housing policy
For his part, Octavio Romero Oropeza, general director of the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit), established that the fundamental premise of the institution “is that housing is a human right, not a simple commodity”, with the aim of creating conditions that substantially improve the quality of life of Mexican families.
The official accused that during the neoliberal period the massive delivery of housing was assumed, but these were characterized by a bad location and, far from representing a solution, they generated more complications due to abusive and unpayable mortgage loans. The director of Infonavit declared that with the beginning of the so-called Fourth Transformation, concrete actions were undertaken to rectify “the injustices of the neoliberal period“, implementing tangible benefits such as the reduction of interest rates, the reduction of the amount of the monthly payment and direct discounts on the balance of the debt, among other supports. “We will continue to strive to build well-being for the workers of Mexico,” said Romero Oropeza.
In her speech, Mara Lezama, constitutional governor of Quintana Roo, highlighted the beginning of the first stage of the Edén Bienestar housing development, a complex of 992 homes that, in her words, represent “built hope” and “guaranteed rights” for the beneficiary families.
Finally, Edna Vega, head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), highlighted the delivery of 225 new homes in the entity, as well as the granting of credits for the improvement of existing housing, mortgage releases and delivery of deeds. “We are generating new conditions in every sense, for the population that requires it most“, assured Vega, specifying that at the national level more than 300 thousand housing solutions are in process as an integral part of this federal program.
