The feast is over
Laura Itzel Castillo, president of the Senate, announced that the reform to constitutional article 127 has already passed the upper house. Their objective is clear: cut the so-called “golden pensions” that drain the treasury.
“The fact is that former senior officials cannot receive more than 70 thousand pesos per month,” Castillo declared on social networks. That is half of what President Claudia Sheinbaum herself earns.
The official justification sounds good. They talk about social justice and avoiding privileges. But here comes the interesting thing: according to the text, it will not affect the common working class. Only those at the top.
Who really gets it?
The list is juicy. It will affect former trusted personnel of decentralized organizations, public companies, state banks and trusts. Well-known names: Banxico, Bancomext, Pemex, CFE and Luz y Fuerza del Centro.
We are talking about retirees who earn more than the head of the Executive. The political message is obvious: “we do cut back on our privileges.” The reform now goes to Deputies.
Castillo closed with a phrase for the album: “This will continue to be our commitment to strengthen social justice in this country.”. We’ll see if this time the words become lasting facts, or just another passing headline.
