The curtain opens: Profeco enters the stage against Ticketmaster
The BTS ticket drama just got a new act. And this time, the authority took the stage with boxing gloves. Iván Escalante, head of Profeco, announced today what many fans expected: a legal procedure and a million-dollar fine against Ticketmaster.
“The calculation is already being made… but we estimate that it is a fine that can reach more than four million pesos,” Escalante declared in the presidential morning.
The reason is clear as the cloudy water that the platform offered: total lack of clarity in the information to consumers. You didn’t know how much you were really going to pay until the last second. An old trick that now has a price.
It’s not just the punishment, it’s the message
But there is something deeper here than a simple economic sanction. Profeco is putting on a whole regulatory play. They enabled an exclusive complaints channel for concerts and shows. They are going after international resale platforms for “abusive and unfair” practices.
And most importantly: every time they identify a fault, there will be a sanction. It’s not “there it goes”, it’s “here we are”.
My father always said that politics is measured by how it treats people in their daily lives. Today, thousands of young people who only wanted to see their Korean idols felt that the system left them out of the game. Profeco’s response says: “No, there are rules here.”
The final calculation is still in process according to the complaints received and what was seen on social networks. But the message has already been sent: ticket sales chaos has consequences. And when we talk about more than four million pesos, we are serious.
Now it’s time to see if this act really changes the show or if it was just a dramatic intermission.
