Epidemic due to negligence? The PRI’s warning about measles
Senator Manuel Añorve Baños threw a poisoned dart. According to him, the Morena governments will be responsible if measles becomes an epidemic in Mexico again. The blame, he says, is “serious negligence” in vaccination policies since the last six-year term.
“this highly contagious disease was kept under control during the PRI governments”
His argument is clear: everything was under control before. Now, he accuses that with the López Obrador administration, the campaigns were abandoned, especially for children. The result, according to their figures, is alarming.
“child coverage… went from more than 90% to just 60%”
Añorve speaks of that collapse. Cancel national vaccination weeks and lower coverage. And then comes the bill: more than seven thousand infections nationwide, he says. The consequence? The disease is once again out of control.
The risk is not only health, but also political for the country. The senator warns that Mexico could lose the certification of a measles-free country, an achievement that, of course, he attributes to his party.
In the end, he wraps his criticism in a seemingly apolitical appeal. In a statement he asks not to politicize the issue and calls on people to get vaccinated. But the initial message was already sent: responsibility and carelessness have the name and surname of the party in power.
Historical memory here is key. Every time a politician talks about past achievements and present crises, you have to ask yourself: where is the official data to support this precipitous decline? Or is this just another chapter in the eternal blame game?
