An experience that moved him
Pedro Sola, host of Ventaneando, went to the Yaakunah animal rehabilitation center days after unleashing a wave of criticism for his comments about dogs in public spaces. In the July 17 broadcast, a capsule of the visit was shown. Alone, accompanied by Linet Puente, Ximena Pérez “La Choco” and Mónica Castañeda, lived with rescued animals.
The driver confessed that it was the first time he had set foot in a shelter. “It was a very peculiar experience because curiously when there are dogs around me, they don’t come close to me. I think they smell me because I’m not affectionate,” he said. He added that he is not afraid of them, but coexistence generated “strange” sensations.
Mónica Castañeda taught him how to approach: let the dogs smell him. “Everyone was very affectionate, calm. They didn’t even bark,” he recalled. He learned stories of animals rescued from abandonment or abuse. “It gave me a lot of emotion, I was close to crying twice, but I held back,” he said.
TV Azteca’s response
The visit occurred after TV Azteca announced an animal welfare awareness program for its teams. In a statement read by Pati Chapoy on July 16, the television station stated: “We firmly believe in animal protection and respect for all living beings.” He clarified that Sola’s statements do not represent his values.
The controversy broke out when Sola expressed her annoyance at the presence of dogs in stores, supermarkets and restaurants. Some phrases were considered offensive by protective associations and public figures. He later offered a public apology.
Regarding the controversy, the driver said: “It has been tremendous for me.” Now, his visit to the shelter seeks to show a different position and approach to animal care.
