Mudryk’s career hangs by a thread
Mykhailo Mudryk, the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history at $108 million, is in the toughest fight of his life. It is not a party, it is your future. The 25-year-old Ukrainian winger appeals a four-year suspension for doping, and if he loses, he will say goodbye to Euro 2028.
The Court of Arbitration for Sports confirmed that the process is moving forward: the parties are already exchanging written arguments, but there is still no date for the hearing. The FA formally charged him in June with “anti-doping rule violations” for the presence and use of a banned substance, although they have not revealed which exactly.
What does Mudryk say?
Since December 2024, when it was learned that his sample tested positive, the player has only said: “I haven’t done anything wrong.” Since then, not a game. On social media you see him training alone, and he was even seen with the Chelsea fans celebrating the Conference League. But on the court, zero minutes.
A four-year ban is the base punishment for a first offense under WADA. But be careful, it is usually reduced if there are mitigating factors: a contaminated supplement, a medication error, or if the athlete admits quickly. Mudryk hasn’t admitted anything, so the legal battle is his only move.
Time is ticking
The sanction, if confirmed, would be retroactive from its provisional suspension. Euro 2028 is in the summer, hosted by Great Britain and Ireland. Ukraine was already out of the World Cup after losing to Sweden in the playoffs, and without Mudryk, qualification for the Euros would be even more uphill.
The Ukrainian arrived at Chelsea as a promise, but his performance was disappointing: only 10 goals in 73 games, most of them as a substitute. His eight and a half year contract, until 2031, now seems a risky bet.
“Sport does not forgive indiscipline, but it also does not forget resilience. Mudryk is in the most difficult moment of his career. I hope he can prove his innocence, because talent without opportunity is like a runner without legs: it hurts to see.”
The ball is in the court’s court. Meanwhile, football waits. And Mudryk, like an athlete who knows what it’s like to fall and get up, trains in silence.
