Morena ruled out Senator Saúl Monreal Ávila as a possible candidate for the governorship of Zacatecas for the 2027 midterm elections. The decision responds to the party’s new internal policy against nepotism, since the current governor of the entity is his brother, David Monreal Ávila.
The national president of Morena, Ariadna Montiel Reyes, explained the reasons at a press conference. He noted that the party will not allow relatives of incumbent rulers to seek to succeed them in elected positions.
“It has been said very clearly that relatives who want to transmit the power of a position they have to another will not be able to participate in Morena. That is not going to happen in Morena,” said Montiel.
The leader stressed that the measure seeks to strengthen the internal unity of the party and eradicate practices that they consider contrary to the principles of the movement.
Dialogue with the senator
Montiel Reyes indicated that he will seek to maintain dialogue with Saúl Monreal, whom he recognized as a long-standing activist within the so-called Fourth Transformation. However, he made it clear that the rule against nepotism will be applied without exceptions.
For his part, Saúl Monreal has publicly maintained his aspiration to run for governor, despite party lines. He assures that his political project responds to citizen support and that “there is nothing for anyone” in the internal process.
Morena’s decision marks a precedent in the internal life of the party and establishes clear limits for the aspirations of relatives of incumbent rulers. The case of Zacatecas will be the first to be applied under this new policy.
