The door closes (from all sides)
The Green Ecologist (PVEM) and Labor (PT) parties have just turned their backs on Senator Saúl Monreal Ávila. His dream of being a candidate for governor of Zacatecas runs into a wall, and he is not the only one.
The official reason is clear: Morena has already said that it will not support him because of its own rules against nepotism. Saúl is the brother of the current state president, David Monreal. A detail that, apparently, now outweighs any loyalty.
Those who say ‘no’
Manuel Velasco Coello, coordinator of the PVEM in the Senate, was direct. He said that his party will not push Monreal. His horse for the race in Zacatecas is another: Carlos Puente, coordinator of the federal deputies.
“…their bet is focused on the coordinator of the federal deputies, Carlos Puente, as his profile to compete for the government of Zacatecas.”
For her part, Geovanna Bañuelos, deputy coordinator of the PT (and herself an applicant), also gave a resounding ‘no’. He clarified that his party does not contemplate supporting Saúl Monreal.
“…rejected that his party contemplates supporting Saúl Monreal. He stressed that, in addition to the internal definition of the PVEM, Monreal himself faces Morena’s rules on nepotism…”
His argument is lethal: in addition to the PVEM decision, there is the small problem of Morena’s statutes. What will he do? Stay or go? But even if he leaves, the PT has already announced that it will not be his lifeline.
He who holds on (against all odds)
Faced with this chorus of rejections, Saúl Monreal’s response is worthy of study. He says that he will not seek candidacy with another political force. That he has not received invitations (something that now seems obvious).
His plan is to “exhaust the internal process” and participate in Morena’s survey, although he admits that the result may not favor him. The only thing he asks is that his “political rights” be respected.
A risky move when all paths seem blocked. The question now is not who will support him, but how long he can hang on before accepting reality.
