Measles does not give up in Mexico
The Ministry of Health has just released the data: 40 deaths from measles between January 2025 and May 2026. No, it is not a mistake. There are 40 people who are no longer here.
Chihuahua leads the black list with 21 deaths. They are followed by Jalisco (5), CDMX (3), Zacatecas (3) and other states with smaller but equally painful numbers: Durango (2), Chiapas, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tlaxcala (1 each).
The most recent: on May 5, three more deaths were added, all in Zacatecas. Thus, from 37 reported until May 4, we jumped to 40 in just one day.
The numbers that hurt
As of yesterday, 17,117 infections had been confirmedout of a total of 40,368 probable cases. That is, of every 100 people with symptoms, 42 had measles. That’s a lot.
The Ministry of Health says it continues to monitor and issue alerts. But one wonders: alerts for what? If the outbreak is already here, the alerts should have sounded earlier.
“The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation and issue alerts to prevent further infections and deaths related to this disease.”
Nice statement. But the figures speak louder than any warning. 40 deaths. 17 thousand infections. And counting.
