The goal as an antidote
Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior needed a goal. Real Madrid needed a victory. This Tuesday at the Bernabéu, everyone found what they were looking for. A 2-1 against Alavés ended a streak of four games without winning and keeps the team six points behind Barcelona.
It was a respite after the elimination in the Champions League and the poor results in the League. Coach Álvaro Arbeloa made it clear:
“Until mathematically there are opportunities, there is a league. Until then we will continue fighting it.”
The night of reunions
The game started with nerves. The public whistled, Alavés created danger. But after half an hour, Mbappé appeared. A deflected shot that fooled the goalkeeper and broke his scoring drought in the League since February.
Vinícius, who had not scored in six games either, sealed the victory in the 50th minute with a long-range shot. Arbeloa celebrated something else:
“What always makes me happy is that Vinicius changed the whistles for applause. For me, that is the important thing.”
The joy was not complete. Éder Militão was injured before half-time (the club says it is not serious) and Toni Martínez scored a goal for Alavés in the last minute.
On other fields
- Athletic beat Osasuna 1-0 with a great performance by Unai Simón, who saved a penalty.
- Mallorca drew 1-1 with Valencia and moves a little further away from relegation.
- Betis, with a late goal from Riquelme, won 3-2 at Girona’s home.
The League is still alive. And Madrid, after tasting victory again, too.
