The transatlantic drama intensifies
French President Emmanuel Macron called for calm. But make no mistake: this is not a surrender. It’s a calculated move.
Trump just dropped the bomb: 25% tariffs on European cars and trucks. A direct blow to the industrial heart of the Old Continent. And Macron, with that statesmanlike tone that he so dominates, responds: “We are strategic allies, let’s focus on global stability.”
But here’s what the headlines don’t tell you: this is pure geopolitical theater.
The strategy behind the speech
Macron knows that the European automotive industry is in the crosshairs. Germany, France, Italy… they all trembled when Trump announced the measure. But the French president is not going to fall into the trap of responding with fury.
“Both blocs, as strategic allies, should focus on global stability instead of exchanging economic threats.”
Translation: “Don’t make me show my cards yet.”
Context is key. There are already tensions over Ukraine, inflationary pressure and a latent trade war with China. Adding a front with the United States would be a disaster. Macron knows it. That is why he calls for dialogue, not war.
What’s next?
The million-dollar question: Will Trump concede? Difficult. This is the same guy who imposed tariffs on steel in 2018 and didn’t back down until the EU threatened retaliation on iconic products like bourbon and Harley motorcycles.
Macron is playing chess while Trump plays poker. The difference is that one needs allies and the other needs an audience.
The European automotive industry, already suffering from the electric transition and Chinese competition, now has another headache. But Macron is not going to let this become an uncontrolled crisis. His move: calm the waters while preparing the counteroffensive.
This is not over. This is just beginning.
