The resignation letter
Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, known as Andy, requested to separate from the Organization Secretariat of Morena to seek a federal deputy for Tabasco in the 2027 midterm elections. The decision was communicated this Monday through a letter addressed to the new national leader of the party, Ariadna Montiel. He also reported his departure from the National Election Commission.
In the document, López Beltrán indicated that he will compete by popular election in a Tabasco district that includes municipalities such as Centro, Jalapa, Tacotalpa and Teapa, considered historical bastions of Obadorismo. He defended the results of his internal management: he assured that during his time in the territorial structure he contributed to adding 10 million members and strengthened the party’s credentials throughout the country.
Response from the leadership
Montiel reacted immediately and publicly. Through social networks, he thanked López Beltrán for his work and dedication in strengthening the militant base of the movement. He highlighted that the son of the former president was a fundamental part of the generational change within the party and wished him success in his new political stage towards the possible federal candidacy in Tabasco.
The rise of Andy, as he is known in Morena, was accompanied from the beginning by debates about the influence of the presidential surname. During the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador he avoided public positions, but was identified as one of the main political operators of the Workerism. In recent months he faced internal wear and tear due to tensions with other leaders and his trip to Japan, which generated criticism even from pro-government sectors.
Partisan context
López Beltrán’s departure occurs in the midst of an internal reconfiguration of Morena promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum and new leadership. His decision to abandon the national leadership to seek direct voting represents a strategic change in his career. It also occurs in a complicated context for the party, after recent internal tensions and adverse electoral results in some states.
