Barren dominion of the English
England controlled the ball and generated 19 shots on goal to just one for Ghana. However, the score did not move from 0-0. The tie leaves both teams with four points in Group L, after their initial victories: Ghana (1-0 against Panama) and England (4-2 against Croatia).
The best opportunity came in the 86th minute: a header from Nico O’Reilly shook the crossbar. Harry Kane collected the rebound, but his shot with his left foot went over the goal.
Ghana responded in the 78th with a counterattack by Abdul Fatawu, who gave up Prince Adu. Ezri Konsa knocked him down from behind before the shot. Adu claimed a foul, but the referee did not sanction.
No room for error
With two dates played, England and Ghana have four points each. The goal difference favors the English (+2 against +1). Both need a good result on the last day to secure first place in the group and avoid complicated crosses.
The next matches will be played on Saturday: England faces Panama in New Jersey; Ghana will do the same in Philadelphia against the same rival.
England have never lost against an African team in nine meetings. Ghana, for its part, has not passed the group stage since the quarterfinals in 2010. The two will seek to seal their place in the next round.
