A defense in the context of the Fourth Transformation
The national president of the Morena party, Luisa María Alcalde, has issued a public statement through her social networks in which she emphatically recognizes the historical struggle of the former president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. His statement is framed in a particular political scenario where, according to his perception, the former president, his family and the legacy of his administration are being the object of a smear campaign and constant attacks.
Mayor argued that it is thanks to the trajectory and perseverance of the political leader that today the national project called Fourth Transformation (4T) is known and implemented. He stressed that this movement, initiated during the 2018-2024 six-year term, finds continuity in the current administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, which consolidates a process of change in the country’s public life.
The principles and the response to criticism
In her message, the party leader went beyond simple recognition and reaffirmed the founding principles of Morena. “At Morena we do not forget. Here we are clear about where we come from, what our principles are and why we are here: to serve the people and not to serve them,” he wrote on the digital platform X (formerly Twitter). This phrase not only seeks to highlight a philosophy of service, but also establishes a direct contrast with the political practices that the movement claims to combat.
The Mayor’s textual message included a precise quote: “Today, when the attacks against the President, his legacy and his family intensify, it is worth remembering that thanks to his historic struggle he began what we now know as the Fourth Transformation of the public life of Mexico.” This statement constitutes the core of his argument, placing the current accusations as an adverse reaction to a project of national transformation.
As a complement to her writing, the Morenista leader shared audiovisual material that shows former President López Obrador exposing his vision of democracy. In the clip, the former head of state emphasizes the need for a true democracy in Mexico and reiterates the fundamental principle that “the power belongs to the people”, maintaining that without the people power cannot and should not exist.
The immediate background: accusations by prosecutor huachicol
Luisa Alcalde’s position is not isolated and responds to a specific media and judicial context. Recently, the sons of the former president, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán (known as “Andy”) and Gonzalo López Beltrán, have been publicly identified for their alleged connection with the huachicol fiscal case. This term refers to large-scale tax evasion and avoidance schemes.
Reports from various media outlets indicate that the López Beltrán brothers have filed an appeal for protection with the aim of preventing a possible arrest warrant against them related to this investigation. However, President Sheinbaum herself, during her morning conference on September 18, categorically denied that her predecessor’s children were formally mentioned or involved in the investigations corresponding to this case.
Additionally, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán faced other criticism after a report by the Latinus media. The investigation revealed that, while on vacation in Tokyo, Japan, “Andy” attended the opening of a luxury property operated by Annex. This lodging platform is owned by Diego Jiménez Labora, an individual identified as his personal friend and who, according to the same report, is part of a group referred to as “El Clan.” This association has raised questions about the ties and lifestyle of the former president’s relatives.
The analysis of these circumstances reveals a complex interaction between the political defense of the government legacy and the management of personal controversies that affect the former president’s family environment. The intervention of a high-ranking figure within the Morena structure, such as Luisa María Alcalde, serves as a mechanism of internal cohesion and projection of a message of unity and resilience in the face of opposition and public scrutiny.
