Commercial and content restrictions
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will not only bring celebration. It also imposes strict rules to protect its intellectual property. In Mexico, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) authorized 398 trademarks linked to the event. This gives FIFA exclusive use of those words and phrases.
Only official sponsors can use terms such as FIFA World Cup 26, FIFA World Cup or World Cup 2026. Official slogans such as Somos 26, nor logos, trophies or official mascots are also not allowed. The list includes 398 registrations that guarantee commercial exclusivity.
What applies to creators and media?
Content creators cannot record or publish goals, highlights or match clips. This material is exclusive to authorized media and sponsors. They also cannot use the protected phrases to monetize or surreptitiously advertise.
For media and fans on social networks, FIFA allows the use of its intellectual property without sanctions if it is for informational purposes and without commercial ties.
Why these restrictions?
These are not arbitrary bans, but measures to protect the value of the tournament. If anyone used the championship assets, the value of the commercial rights would plummet. FIFA warns that, in extreme cases, this would prevent financing the event and programs such as FIFA Forward Development.
The association recommends using generic football images and terms without registered intellectual property. This avoids conflicts and respects the legal framework.
