The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) confirmed the return to the country of Julio Ibáñez, sports journalist for TUDN, and cameraman Danny García. Both were arrested last March in South Africa.
Return to Mexico
The SRE explained that the legal process in that country has already concluded. “It is reported that the judicial authorities of that country have concluded the corresponding legal process and the nationals are scheduled to take a flight back to Mexico tonight,” said the agency headed by Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco. The institution reiterated its “firm commitment to the defense and protection at all times of Mexicans abroad.”
The Mexican embassy in South Africa indicated that on March 25, the judicial authority authorized his conditional release. Since March 19, they were provided with consular assistance and protection. Diplomatic personnel contacted local authorities to verify the charges, secure legal representation and establish communication with fellow citizens.
“From the embassy and the General Directorate of Africa and the Middle East of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the importance of these cases was conveyed for their resolution based on what is established in the legal framework and their right to due process,” added the official statement. Permanent contact was also maintained with families to inform about legal progress and provide comprehensive support.
The return of Ibáñez and García closes a chapter that began with their arrest in South Africa for reasons not detailed in the official statement.
