Goodbye to the lights: Joselito Adame hangs up his cape (and this time it seems serious)
It seems that the eternal dream of bullfighting is over even for Joselito Adame. The Mexican bullfighter, the one who made more than one bull (and some critics) tremble with his slow death passes, has just dropped the bomb: he is retiring. Yes, as you read it. After 26 years of risking his life in the plazas, the hydrocalid decided that his last job will be tomorrow in Huesca, Spain. And no, it’s not a “I’m leaving but I’ll be back” Luis Miguel style on his tours. This time it smells definitive.
From child prodigy to legend: the numbers that matter
Imagine: he started at 11 years old (when the rest of us barely knew how to tie our shoes) and now, with a career that includes 606 runs and the record of being the Mexican with the most performances in Madrid (18, to be exact), the guy says “this far, thank you”. Reasons? The typical ones: “I need to focus on the man, not the bullfighter”. That is, the classic “I want to spend time with my family” but in a light-suit version.
In his statement (which, let’s admit it, sounds deeper than a tweet of cheap philosophy), Joselito dropped gems like: “The bull has given me everything” (spoiler: except a quiet retirement) and “I am privileged to be a bullfighter”. What he didn’t say, but we all thought: “And also for coming out of 606 close encounters with sharp antlers in one piece.”.
The Adame family reacts (and no, there was no drama)
While the bullfighting world asks itself “and now who excites us with Veronicas?”, his father, José Guadalupe Adame, gave the most Mexican response possible: “Go ahead, my son”. No whining, no “but what am I going to do without your trophies in the room?”. Just unconditional support, like in soap operas, but without a villain involved.
Oh, and in case anyone forgot: this already happened in 2019, when Joselito took a pause (which lasted the length of a sigh on the line). But now, with that farewell letter that seems to have been written by Paulo Coelho on an inspired day, things look more serious. Will it come back? Who knows. The only thing that is certain is that tomorrow in Huesca, while fighting bulls from El Pilar alongside Roca Rey and Rufo, more than one will take out the white handkerchief… and not precisely to ask for ears.
