Two artistic dynasties met on the stage of the Shakespeare Forum. Marimar Vega and Bruno Bichir presented “Réquiem”, a work that is already generating conversation.
Bichir highlighted his partner’s innate talent. “It is a delight to work with Marimar. She comes from an extraordinary family, since she was little she was in theaters and it shows; no one gives her that, she didn’t study it, she carries it in her skin,” she said during the premiere.
A story of morality and justice
The plot follows prosecutor Emma Solís (Vega) and Father Banks (Bichir) in a Texas penitentiary. Banks must confess to an eleven-year-old minor who will be executed that night. Solís took the minor to death row for a serious crime.
For just over an hour, the characters debate morality, justice, faith and forgiveness. Bichir pointed out that the death penalty interests everyone. In Mexico, he said, it has been discussed as a measure against crime.
“Both points of view are convincing. It is a debate between love and punishment, to teach a lesson and feel calm as a society, because prisons are universities of crime,” he explained.
Theme validity
Marimar Vega considered that the plot is more current than ever. “If we see the news in our country, about children, justice and punishments, it is a timely conversation. We are doing something wrong as a society. Justice must be debated,” he expressed.
The public responded with enthusiasm. In the end, the actors returned to the stage three times for prolonged applause.
