From the ashes of a broken marriage
Before singing “Dance Again” in Las Vegas, Jennifer Lopez paused. Not to breathe, but to remember. She talked about the most complicated moment: her divorce from Marc Anthony.
The artist joked about her love history. She said that during her third separation process she thought: “I’m really starting to get good at this.” But behind the humor, there was pain.
“I was about to give up. I was a single mother with two three-year-old twins and I called one of my mentors,” she confessed.
The phrase that changed everything
Her mentor, Louise, now deceased, asked her a key question: “Jennifer, you are a dancer, right?”. After J.Lo’s yes, came the perfect analogy.
“When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?” Louise asked. Jennifer responded: “I keep going until I get the steps right.” And the mentor finished: “That’s right, Jennifer. Always keep dancing.”.
That phrase became his personal mantra. A reminder to not stop, even when the choreography of life gets ugly.
The emotional backdrop
Her marriage to Marc Anthony lasted ten years and gave them twins Max and Emme. They officially separated in 2014, but the breakup had been brewing.
In her book “True Love,” J.Lo detailed the anguish of that time. She suffered from anxiety and panic attacks trying to balance her career – with American Idol and hits like “On the Floor” – with parenting and a crumbling relationship.
“I looked at Benny [Medina] and my mother and said those words: ‘I can’t continue with Marc.’ Then I burst into tears,” she wrote.
Marc Anthony was more concise when speaking about the subject in 2011: “These things happen; this is not a funeral, it’s just two people who realized it was not sustainable.”
The dance continues… with other companions
Today their lives follow different rhythms. Marc Anthony shares his life with the Paraguayan model Nadia Ferreira, with whom he has one child and is expecting another.
Jennifer rekindled her romance with Ben Affleck in 2021, but filed for divorce this year. He has admitted that it is difficult for him to be without a partner, although now he takes it “more calmly.”
Before Marc Anthony, she was briefly married to Ojani Noa and Chris Judd. It seems that in love, as in dancing, sometimes you have to rehearse several steps before finding the rhythm.
