The Ayatollah’s Warning
Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, issued a direct warning to Washington this Sunday. Amid rising tensions, he stated that any US military action would trigger a “regional war” in the Middle East.
“If they start a war, this time it will be a regional war,” declared Khamenei during the commemorations of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Context and military deployment
The 86-year-old Ayatollah’s words come as the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its battle group patrol the Arabian Sea. Donald Trump maintains the threat of possible military action following the repression of protests in Iran, although he insists that Tehran “wants to negotiate.”
Khamenei assured that Iran is not seeking to start a conflict, but would respond harshly to any aggression. He accused the United States of coveting the country’s energy and mineral resources.
The internal Iranian crisis
Meanwhile, inside Iran the situation remains tense. Khamenei hardened his stance in the face of protests that began in late December over the collapse of the currency and led to a direct challenge to his leadership.
The ayatollah called the demonstrations an attempted “coup” and supported the repression. Human rights organizations report tens of thousands of detainees and thousands of deaths, figures that the Iranian government denies or minimizes.
Trump has established as red lines the mass execution of detainees or the murder of peaceful protesters. But he has not clarified whether he will resort to the use of force.
The international community watches with concern as tensions continue to rise. Every statement, every military move, brings the region closer to a critical point where words could become actions.
