Ana Bárbara Buhr: When the “glow up” becomes a tragedy
Social networks are in a drama (as if they were lacking) after the death of Ana Bárbara Buhr, better known as Ana B, was confirmed, a Brazilian influencer who left this world on June 16 after a cosmetic surgery that, supposedly, was going to be her “great transformation.” Spoiler: it didn’t end well.
The price of beauty (and no, we’re not talking about money)
It turns out that the clinic where Ana B underwent the procedure already had more red flags than the profile of a toxic ex. It recently changed its name (did someone say “reinvent itself to escape the past”?), and oh, surprise, it was already in the crosshairs for other surgery-related deaths. But of course, since Ana B had a commercial agreement with them (in exchange for free liposuction, because in this life nothing is really “free”), well that was it. Moral of the story? If a place offers you a procedure in exchange for a promotion, run as if your ex texted you “hello” at 2 AM.
The case went viral thanks to Elgar Sweden, who launched the hashtag #JusticeforAnaB, because, obviously, this smells like medical negligence from kilometer zero. The influencer was only 31 years old, had a career on the rise and, like any mortal in the digital age, filter dreams come true. But all it managed to do was become another tragic case on the list of botched cosmetic procedures.
When networks become courts
The internet, as always, is divided between those who demand justice, those who say “she asked for it” (because of course, victim blaming never goes out of style) and those who are just waiting for the next scandal to change the subject. Meanwhile, the clinic in question washes its hands faster than Pilate, and Ana B becomes just another statistic in a world obsessed with physical perfection.
Lesson learned? Investigate what you’re getting into (literally) before signing a contract with a clinic that looks like something out of an episode of Black Mirror. And, above all, remember that likes are not worth your life.
