Hulk Hogan passes away leaving an indelible legacy in wrestling

The life and legacy of the icon who transformed wrestling into a global phenomenon.

Farewell to a wrestling legend

The world of sports entertainment mourns the loss of Terry Eugene Bollea, known universally as Hulk Hogan, who died last Friday, July 25 at the age of 71 due to cardiac arrest in Clearwater, Florida. Despite medical efforts, the gladiator was unable to overcome the episode, marking the end of an era in professional wrestling.

From musician to superstar

Born on August 11, 1953 in Augusta, Georgia, Hogan combined his training in finance with his passion for music before finding his true calling in the ring. Under the tutelage of maestro Hiro Matsuda, he debuted in 1977 and quickly became the face of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now WWE. His charisma and physical strength catapulted him to fame, consolidating Hulkmania as a cultural phenomenon in the 80s.

The architect of WrestleMania

Hogan was a key player in the success of the first edition of WrestleMania in 1985, where his fight alongside Mr. T against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff sealed the future of the company. His rivalry with André the Giant, especially at WrestleMania III, is still considered a pinnacle moment in the sport. Furthermore, his impact transcended borders: from epic battles in Japan with NJPW to memorable matches in Mexico against legends like Canek and Mil Máscaras.

Legacy beyond the ring

Hogan’s influence extended to film, with his iconic role in Rocky III (1982), and to television through reality shows such as Hogan Knows Best. Although his career was not without controversy – such as his temporary expulsion from WWE in 2015 – his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2005, presented by Sylvester Stallone, reaffirmed his legendary status.

A farewell with honors

Vince McMahon, CEO of WWE, described him as “the greatest superstar of all time”. His legacy endures not only in audience records or historical sellouts, but in the collective memory of generations who grew up with his war cry: “What are you going to do when Hulkmania is unleashed on you?”.

For its part, Senegal advanced as one of the best third parties, third in Group I behind France and Norway. A 5-0 win over Iraq secured their place. Under the command of Pape Thiaw, the African team stands out for the defensive leadership of Sadio Mané, who has not had his best scoring production but provides collective sacrifice.

The winner of this duel will play on Monday, July 6 in the round of 16, facing the rival that emerges from the match between the United States and Bosnia, which also takes place this Wednesday in Los Angeles.
