WWE buys AAA and wrestling will never be the same again

The wrestling empire expands with a merger that promises to shake up the ring.

WWE swallows AAA: The end of wrestling as we know it?

Because nothing says “we are an empire” like buying the competition, WWE announced in its typical dramatic style (prior to Wrestlemania 41, because of course, what better time?) that it acquired AAA, that Mexican company that was once a rival. Yes, the same one that Antonio Peña founded and that now, ironically, ends up in the hands of the American giant. Who said capitalism doesn’t win by knockout?

The spectacle of the announcement: caravan, fighters and a lot of nostalgia

It couldn’t be a simple press release, that would be very boring! A whole circus had to be set up with elements of the thrice-starry caravan and Latin wrestlers from WWE (because nothing sells better than exoticism). Marisela Peña, president of the AAA, appeared with her son Dorian Roldán and, of course, Triple H himself (who must be thinking: “Another business for my resume”).

RelatedWWE acquires Lucha Libre AAA in a historic move

Roldán, excited as if he were at a funeral, declared that this was “a new chapter in the history of wrestling.” Of course, because when one company swallows another, it is always poetic. He mentioned Antonio Peña’s legacy, which is moving, although one wonders what the founder would think of seeing his creation become just another subsidiary.

And so that no one forgets that this is a business, there were the former AAA wrestlers who now shine in WWE: Rey Mysterio, Penta, Rey Fénix, Dragon Lee and Santos Escobar. Everyone smiling as if they didn’t know their contracts could change tomorrow. And, of course, we couldn’t miss Son of the Viking, the banner of the AAA, who is surely already practicing his new gimmick: “Vikingo Jr.”.

The first event: Worlds Collide… again

To celebrate this acquisition (or funeral, depending on how you see it), on June 7 at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles they will revive the Worlds Collide concept, which was already done in the 90s. Because in WWE, if something worked once, it has to be repeated ad nauseam. The result? Probably a show full of surprises, although the only real surprise would be that it doesn’t end with a Triple H raising someone else’s hand as a trophy.

What’s next? Buy CMLL? Take over all the masks in Mexico? In the meantime, fans can enjoy this new “chapter” (or monopoly, depending on how you look at it).

Egypt returns to the 2026 World Cup with history and renewed leadership

Egypt, the first African country in a World Cup, returns in 2026 with key friendlies.

The Egyptian national team, affiliated with CAF, is part of Group G on the road to the 2026 World Cup. Known as The Pharaohs, it is under the technical direction of Hossam Hassan and has Mohamed Salah as captain. Their home stadium is Misr Stadium and their FIFA code is EGY.

Preparation with high-level friendlies

In the March 2026 window, Egypt played two friendly matches: against Saudi Arabia (March 27) and against Spain (March 31). These dates are part of the adjustment calendar for the tournament. The squad statistics, with caps and goals, were updated after the match against Spain.

A World Cup milestone that lasts

Egypt has qualified for the World Cup four times: 1934, 1990, 2018 and 2026. It was the first African country to qualify for a World Cup. In their debut in 1934 they lost 4-2 against Hungary, with two goals from Abdulrahman Fawzi. This background highlights the relevance of its presence in 2026.

Leadership and individual records

The captaincy falls to forward Mohamed Salah, a Liverpool figure, in a period led by Hossam Hassan as coach. Historically, the team was formed in 1920 and was the first African team to compete in the Olympic Games (Belgium), with an initial defeat against Italy.

Egypt returns to the World Cup scene with a trajectory that combines tradition and renewal. The recent friendlies help define the group that will seek to overcome the group stage for the first time in its history.
