Statistical miracle or strategy that works?
Marcela Figueroa Franco, the head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), came to the fore this Friday with a number that makes noise: a 65% reduction in intentional homicides in Guanajuato between September 2025 and January 2026.
He presented it at the morning conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum, from Irapuato. According to their figures, murders went from an average of 12.71 to only 4.45 per day. January 2026 would be the lowest month in almost a year and a half.
“This decrease also has to do with relevant arrests in the entity,” declared Figueroa, attributing part of the success to operations in the state governed by National Action.
The other side of the coin
The official also highlighted decreases in other crimes: feminicide (-50%), extortion (-31%) and zero reported kidnappings. A panorama that is painted almost idyllic.
But here is the detail that you cannot ignore. While they celebrate those numbers, others soared in silence.
Robbery against a pedestrian with violence rose by 18.5%. The burglary with violence increased by an alarming 30.8%. The violence did not disappear, it just changed direction.
Did security really improve or did the problem simply move? Official statistics are like a distorting mirror: they show what they want you to see, but the whole picture always has cracks. The arrests may explain part, but never the whole story.
