The historic feat that Faith Kipyegon is pursuing
The Kenyan athlete Faith Kipyegon, triple Olympic 1,500 meter champion and current world record holder in this distance (3:49.11) and in the mile (4:07.64), is preparing for an unprecedented challenge: becoming the first woman to complete a mile in less than four minutes. This attempt will take place on June 26 at the Stade Charlety in Paris, during the event “Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile”, organized by Nike.
The context of a legendary record
The four-minute barrier in the mile has been a symbolic milestone in athletics since the British Roger Bannister achieved it in 1954 with a time of 3:59.4. Although more than 1,700 men have surpassed this mark since then, no woman has achieved it. Kipyegon, who set the current women’s record in 2023 during the Monaco Diamond League, needs to shave 7.64 seconds to reach this goal.
“Breaking four minutes would cement my legacy,” Kipyegon stated in a recent interview. “The next generation of runners is watching us, and we must show that the impossible is achievable.” The 31-year-old Kenyan emphasized the importance of mental toughness and confidence in the training process, without drastically altering her routine under the supervision of her coach, Patrick Sang.
Technology and key support
For this attempt, Kipyegon will use the latest Nike innovations, including an aerodynamic suit and spiked shoes designed to maximize performance. In addition, he will have the support of his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge, who in 2019 completed a marathon in less than two hours (1:59:40) during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, although the mark was not approved by World Athletics.
Kipyegon will approach the test by dividing it into strategic segments: “I must focus on how I will overcome the 800 meters, then the 1,200 meters, and finally adjust those critical seconds.” Her methodical approach reflects the discipline that has led her to win three consecutive Olympic golds (2016, 2021, 2024) and break records on the same Paris track where she will race this time.
Impact and legacy
Beyond personal achievement, Kipyegon seeks to inspire his daughter Alyn and young athletes: “The dream must be accompanied by patience and perseverance.” If achieved, the result will be subject to validation by World Athletics, but its significance will be indisputable. “Seeing less than four minutes on the stopwatch would be historic,” he concluded.
