The explosion that shook the UV
An explosion in a laboratory at the Faculty of Bioanalysis of the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) put the entire academic community on high alert. The incident occurred on the Veracruz-Boca del Río campus and left a balance of 22 students who needed immediate medical attention. Classes in the three faculties in the Health Sciences area were immediately suspended.
What really happened
According to the official statement from the UV, the accident occurred during a practice in Laboratory 3. An exothermic reaction caused the expansion of the container container, which ended up spilling. The chemical spill protocol was activated instantly. Of the 22 students present, 15 were discharged immediately, five remained under preventive observation and two were referred to the IMSS for specialized follow-up.
The institutional response
“The event was caused during a practice in Laboratory 3 by an exothermic reaction that caused the expansion and subsequent spill of the container container.”
This was explained by the university in a press release. Classes for the rest of Tuesday were taught online, and it is expected that they will return to in-person classes on Wednesday, once the cleaning of the affected space is guaranteed. The student and academic community is on alert, and the debate about safety in laboratories has already begun.
