The SAT debunks the myth of the “taxman” knocking on doors as if it were Halloween
Imagine this: a SAT official in a black suit with a calculator in hand knocking on your door as if he were the protagonist of Money Heist. Well, forget it, because reality is less dramatic than an episode of La Casa de Papel. The Tax Administration Service came out to clarify that they are NOT organizing a mass tour of taxpayers’ homes, much less harassing grandparents who are barely surviving on their pension (because, let’s be honest, that would be the ultimate level of tax villainy).
Fake tax news: when fear sells more than reality
According to the SAT, certain media are spreading hoaxes as if they were viral memes, creating a collective paranoia style “will the Treasury come for me?”. They call it fiscal terrorism, but in reality it is more clickbait terrorism. The institution clarifies that there is no special operation against YouTubers, freelancers, landlords or that guy who sells tamales and declares in RESICO. Of course, if someone knocks on your door claiming to be from the treasury with an express fine, they are probably a scammer with less credibility than an influencer promoting cryptos.
What to do in that case? The SAT recommends reporting immediately (and perhaps recording the moment to upload it to TikTok with the hashtag #NoMeRobesSAT). The official channels are:
- Email: [email protected] (yes, the same one who would never respond to a “hello, how are you?”)
- Phone: 55 627 22 728, because sometimes vintage works.
So the SAT never visits homes? Well… not so fast
Here comes the plot twist: the SAT can knock on your door, but not on a whim. According to the Tax Code, they can do so when they detect risks such as flagrant evasion or false invoices that are more obvious than a poorly applied Instagram filter. Of course, they swear that they will not go after retirees unless someone is financing their retirement in Ibiza with undeclared money (in which case, deserved).
Moral: if you comply with your tax obligations, sleep peacefully. And if not… better hire an accountant before the meme becomes a reality.
