Months before Mexico hosts the 2026 World Cup, FIFA makes available its documentary ‘Hero’, dedicated to the 1986 tournament. The production brings together emblematic images of that cup, from Diego Maradona’s performance to the atmosphere in the country’s stadiums and streets.
What does the documentary show?
‘Hero’ does not follow a traditional script. Combines key match footage with off-pitch footage. The central figure is Maradona, then captain of Argentina. He arrived in Mexico as a star and became a legend after winning the title and scoring the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal.
On June 22, 1986, Argentina faced England in the quarterfinals. In the 51st minute, Maradona got ahead of goalkeeper Peter Shilton and pushed the ball with his hand. The controversial goal defined the final 2-1. Diego himself later acknowledged that it was “a little with his head and a little with the hand of God.”
Other figures such as Hugo Sánchez, Gary Lineker, Emilio Butragueño and Careca also appear.
Where to see it?
The film has become one of the official productions most remembered by fans. It is available on the FIFA YouTube channel.
