The Mexican filmmaker David Pablos repeats at the Venice Festival, but with a different role. A year after winning with On the Road in the Horizons section, he will now be part of the jury that will award the films in that same category, from September 2 to 12.
“A year ago I was in France finishing the sound design to arrive on time. Now I’m running for other reasons (laughs),” says the director. “I return to a section of more risky, authorial cinema, less formatted by the industry.”
Jury with five nationalities
He will be accompanied by Hong Kong director Elizabeth Lo, Italian actress Barbara Ronchi, American distributor Peter Becker and French filmmaker Valérie Donzelli, who will chair the group.
The selection of competing films will be announced in ten days; More than a dozen titles are expected.
“We are five different nationalities. The key is to argue and reach consensus. There is always subjectivity, but dialogue democratizes the decision,” explains Pablos.
On the road continues to achieve success
The film, produced by Inna Payán and Diego Luna, has been in theaters for seven weeks and more than 50 thousand viewers. In addition, it leads the Ariel Award nominations with 13, including Film, Director and Actor for Osvaldo Sánchez.
“I appreciate the recognition from the union and that many collaborators are also nominated,” says Pablos.
The Ariel ceremony will take place on October 3 at a venue yet to be defined.
