Guillermo del Toro’s triumph at the Venice Film Festival
In September 2017, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro achieved one of the highlights of his career by receiving the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for his film The Shape of Water. This recognition placed him as the third Ibero-American director to achieve this, after Luis Buñuel with Bella de día (1967) and Lorenzo Vigas with Desde siempre (2015).
During his emotional speech, Del Toro shared a personal reflection: “I am 52 years old, I weigh 300 pounds and I have made 10 films. There is a moment in a storyteller’s life when you risk everything to do something different.” This phrase encapsulates his creative philosophy, based on audacity and authenticity.
The impact of The Shape of Water
The film, which would later win the Oscar Award for Best Picture, captivated audiences and critics with its unique narrative: a romance between a mute woman and an amphibious creature in the 1960s. The film not only stood out for its visual aesthetics, but also for its thematic depth, exploring loneliness, discrimination and unconditional love.
Before Venice, Del Toro had already left his mark at other festivals such as Cannes with Cronos (1993) and Toronto with Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). However, his participation in the Mostra marked a before and after in his career, consolidating him as a master of fantastic cinema.
The next project: Frankenstein
Now, the director is preparing his adaptation of Frankenstein, based on the classic novel by Mary Shelley. The cast includes the talented Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Mia Goth as Elizabeth. Although production details are scarce, Del Toro has shared trailers on his Instagram account, revealing locations in London and Scotland.
This new commitment reaffirms his commitment to the fantasy genre, something he defended in Venice: “I dedicate it to every young Latin American director who dreams of making fantastic films. Insist, because you can.” His message inspires new generations to pursue their artistic vision without fear of convention.
Legacy and artistic vision
Guillermo del Toro is not only an exceptional filmmaker, but also a defender of unlimited creativity. His ability to fuse the poetic with the grotesque has made him a global reference. From his tribute to director Sergio Leone to his focus on stories with marginalized characters, his work transcends entertainment to become a reflection of the human condition.
With Frankenstein, he promises to explore new nuances of horror and fantasy, maintaining his unmistakable stamp. Fans of his filmography are looking forward to this next chapter in his career.
