A tribute to three decades of war history
Thousands of spectators gathered this Thursday in the capital of Croatia to witness an unprecedented military parade, celebrating the 30th anniversary of a decisive victory during the war conflict of the 1990s. The event not only paid tribute to veterans, but also highlighted the modernization of the Croatian armed forces, in a context where the country negotiates a strategic loan from the newly created European Union defense fund.
Air and naval display: power and coordination
The highlight of the event was the flyover of the Rafale aircraft, French-made fighters that are part of the Croatian air fleet. These devices, known for their versatility and cutting-edge technology, symbolize the military alliance between Croatia and NATO. In parallel, the Croatian Navy deployed a flotilla in the port of Split, located in the Adriatic Sea, demonstrating its maritime projection capacity. The participation of 3,400 troops—including units of the army, police and emergency services—underlined the multidisciplinary integration of the national security forces.
This deployment not only had a commemorative nature, but also a geostrategic one. Croatia, as a member of the EU since 2013, seeks to consolidate its defensive profile in the face of regional challenges. Possible access to the European defense fund would allow financing the acquisition of advanced equipment and strengthening transnational cooperation in security matters.
Historical legacy and future projection
The parade evoked Operation Storm of 1995, a key military campaign for Croatian independence. Decorated veterans marched alongside new generations of soldiers, in a gesture that intertwines memory and modernity. Analysts highlight that these types of events, beyond their symbolism, serve to evaluate the interoperability between the military branches and their adaptation to international standards.
The presence of European authorities at the event reflects the growing weight of Croatia in the continental defense architecture. With investments in radar and cybersecurity systems, the country aims to become a security hub in the Western Balkans.
