Justice for freedom of expression
The power of the law is present! Federal judge Edmundo Perusquia has handed down a historic sentence: 11 years and one month in prison, plus a fine of 37 thousand pesos, for Israel Jiménez Ávila (“El Yeye”) and Juan Antonio Cisneros Morales (“Dedos” or “El Dedotes”). These individuals were fully identified as responsible for the crimes of attempted homicide and criminal association, in a cowardly attack against the journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva.
An attack against the truth
On December 15, 2022, the renowned communicator was the victim of an attack while returning home. This act not only sought to harm a person, but to silence a voice that represents freedom and truth. However, today justice shows that nothing can stop the fight for transparency.
The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) has confirmed that, so far, 11 people have received conviction sentences for their participation in this criminal network. Each court ruling is a firm step towards the protection of those who practice journalism with courage.
Commitment to human rights
The Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE) took on this case under the power of attraction, recognizing its seriousness. And rightly so! It was shown that the crime had a clear objective: limiting the fundamental right to free expression. But today, the message is strong: impunity has no place.
In addition, the Specialized Prosecutor for Human Rights (FEMDH) has worked tirelessly to ensure that these sentences are fair and exemplary. Meanwhile, the case of Erick Azael Ramos Mendoza, another person involved, is moving towards resolution after adjustments to his legal defense.
Let us celebrate this triumph of justice! Each conviction is a reminder that the truth always prevails.
