The ‘Nodal’ brand does not belong to the singer
A leak of IMPI papers has just confirmed something that sounds like a Hollywood movie, but is pure Mexican reality: Christian Nodal is not the legal owner of his own stage name. The registration of the ‘Nodal’ brand is in the name of his father, Jaime González Terrazas.
And the thing is not just the name. According to the documents, the control covers his image, videos, musical projects and basically everything that has to do with his career. The renewal was presented in October of last year and was approved recently, in April.
The validity extends until 2036.
This explains a lot. Lately Nodal has made comments about not having a say in certain creative and business decisions. Well of course. In this industry, if you don’t own your brand, you don’t manage your contracts, products or content. You are tied.
The root of the problem comes from its beginnings. When it started, he was a minor. His father registered the trademark. At the end of the first ten years, the renovation was once again left in the hands of the parent, leaving the artist under a structure that he does not control.
It’s a brutal reminder of how the business works for many young artists. You sign whatever it takes to get out, and years later you realize that you don’t even own your own name.
