Because the earth shook, but the military junta remains firm (like a concrete wall)
Ah, the earthquake of magnitude 7.7 on the Richter scale that shook Myanmar (or Burma, as those nostalgic for colonialism prefer) on March 28. As if the civil war, the coup d’état and repression were not enough, nature decided to join the party with an earthquake that, according to the latest calculations, has left 3,085 dead, 4,715 injured and 341 disappeared. Come on, a normal day in the Burmese calendar of misfortunes.
And the numbers continue to rise… like the government’s incompetence
State television MRTV, that so reliable source of information in a military regime, assures that the rescue efforts are “complex.” What a revelation! When half the country is in ruins and the other half is busy suppressing protests, of course it is difficult to count bodies. Of course, the Army, an expert in making opponents disappear, now cannot find 341 victims under the rubble. Irony? No, only Myanmar.
In case anyone had forgotten (as if that were possible), the country has been in chaos since the military decided that the 2020 elections were too democratic for their liking. So, between bullets and earthquakes, the local population must choose what kills them first: political violence or a collapsed building. Decisions, decisions!
Moral? When the earth trembles and the rulers do too, the result is a cocktail of tragedy and absurdity worthy of a horror movie… but without a happy ending.
