The specter of interference returns to Europe
Berlin is smelling Russian smoke after a wave of digital attacks against Signal, the secure messaging app that many politicians and journalists use as if it were a bunker. But the bunkers also have doors, and someone is forcing them.
300 accounts compromised, according to Der Spiegel. It is not just any robbery: they directly targeted key figures in the government, military and media. Federal prosecutors have already opened a preliminary investigation since February 2026 for cyber espionage.
“The attackers used fake messages simulating security alerts, tricking victims into entering codes or scanning links,” a government spokesperson confirmed.
Why does this sound familiar to me?
This is not the first time we have seen this script. Let us remember how Russian actors have used similar tactics in previous European elections or cyber conflicts. What’s new here is white: Signal, until now considered a digital fortress for sensitive conversations.
Authorities have not officially laid the finger on Moscow, but officials admit between the lines that it “fits a pattern.” Translation: we know who it was, but we need judicial proof before we say it out loud.
Meanwhile, the uncomfortable question: If they managed to breach the accounts of critical decision makers, what other sensitive information is now in the wrong hands? History has taught us that these attacks are not just technical; They are open doors to destabilize trust.
