The art of the statement (or how to lose 79 million pesos on the couch)
It seems that in Mexican public life there is a new type of hide-and-seek game: that of the millions of pesos that, according to politicians, are never lost, they simply do not declare their whereabouts in time. The latest to join this peculiar tradition is Adán Augusto López, who, with the elegance of a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, has come out to vehemently deny the accusations that he omitted to declare the receipt of 79 million pesos. Have they fallen between the cushions of the chair? It is a theory as valid as any other.
The now Morena coordinator in the Senate assures that it is completely false that he has forgotten to mention this modest sum in his 2023 and 2024 asset declarations. Of course, one would think that an amount equivalent to the lottery of several ordinary citizens would be difficult to overlook, but perhaps at his income level it is as if we forgot to declare a ten peso coin that we found in our pants pocket. Things that happen.
It’s the closet’s fault: the conservative right attacks again
Faced with the evidence – or the simple mention – of this accounting omission, Adan Augusto did not mince words and deployed the most popular defensive strategy of the moment: the “attack by the conservative right”. Tachan! It turns out that everything is a dirty maneuver by his opponents. It’s almost touching how this argument has become the perfect wild card, the “because I said so!” of adult politics. An error in your statement? Conservative right. Did your food burn? Surely the conservative right turned down the gas on the stove.
The funniest thing – or tragic, depending on your sense of humor – is the solemnity with which this explanation is presented. It is not a simple human error or a breakdown misinterpreted by authority. No, gentlemen. It is a concocted plot to tarnish the name of an impeccable public servant. One almost expects that in his next statement an expense item will appear for “exorcism expenses to scare away the right”. It would be as valid an expense as any other in this circus.
The million-dollar question – or the 79 million, to be exact – is: where were these resources? In an account that was a shame to show? Invested in meme-named cryptocurrencies? Or simply waiting for the media storm to pass to be declared calmly? The lack of specific details about the origin and destination of this capital is, how to put it, strategically vague. We are left with the promise and faith that, when a politician says “it’s false,” the truth magically bends to his will.
This episode is another jewel in the necklace of financial inconsistencies that adorns the neck of the political class. While ordinary citizens must justify every last cent to the SAT, our representatives seem to play a game of Monopoly with the rules changed on the fly. The next time you can’t find your keys, you know who to blame: the conservative right, who probably hid them.
