Earthquake in Cuba shakes the Yucatan Peninsula
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake recorded this Monday in western Cuba was felt in several areas of the Yucatán Peninsula, including Cancún, Quintana Roo, and Mérida, Yucatán. This was reported by authorities and residents.
The National Seismological Service reported that the movement occurred at 1:00 in the afternoon, southeastern Mexico time. The epicenter was located in Cuban territory. The tremor surprised residents and tourists in the affected areas.
The governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, indicated that so far there are no reports of damage in the entity. The review protocols remain active to rule out damage to infrastructure and guarantee the safety of the population.
State authorities ruled out the possibility of a tsunami on the coast of Quintana Roo. Emergency teams carried out preventive monitoring in different parts of the state.
Users on social networks shared videos of the moment of the movement, mainly in Cancun and hotel areas. Some establishments carried out preventive evacuations. Visitors and workers reported a strong perception of the earthquake.
